Remembering Bark River Lion Brian Adams

Brian F. “Cleaver” “Papa Smurf” Adams, 73, of Bark River, passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022 at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born on April 11, 1948 in Rhinelander, WI, the son of Frank and Marion (Miller) Adams. Brian was a longtime resident of Bark River and graduated from Bark River Harris High School in 1966.

Brian served in the U.S Army from 1968 until his honorable discharge in 1970. He was honored with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

In 1980, Brian and his brother, Dan, took over their father’s business, Adam’s Grocery Store in Bark River. He co-owned and operated the store for 36 years until his retirement in 2016.

Brian played a key role in putting together the Bark River Off Road Races which began in 1976. He was a member of the Bark River Lions Club, Bark River Fire Department, and American Legion. Brian was known by many for his dedication to the Bark River community, both through his business and the personal time he devoted to many area organizations and events. In 2021, he was honored as the 2021 Bark River 4th of July Grand Marshall.

Among survivors include his children, Charles (Lisa) Adams, Laura Adams, and Rachael Latta; grandchildren, Devin Adams, Tasha Adams, Dawson Adams, John Adams, Sam Adams, Brian Latta, and Alex Latta; four great-grandchildren; siblings, Ray (Jackie) Sanilia and his four children, Connie (Dennis) Schmider and her two children, and Dan (Clara) Adams and his four children.
